Feb. 17, 2007
Final Stats
Johnson C. Smith University traveled to Raleigh, N.C. and left with a 94-78 victory over the home Shaw University Bears. Five Golden Bulls were able to score in double-figures as Smith continues to battle for second place in the league. Currently, there is a four-way tie between Bowie State, Virginia State, St. Augustine's and JCSU.
Johnson C. Smith University controlled the game from start to finish. The always respectable head coach Steve Joyner rotated his entire bench to attempt to keep the score at a reasonable deficit. Fortunately for him, but unfortunately for the Bears, JCSU had their best first half of the season shooting 60% from the field.
Shaw settled down in the second half, cutting the lead to 15 several times, but the damage was already done. Damola Obadina had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Cori Gaither added 16 points in the loss. Melvin Smith and Brandon Armistead added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Leading the way for JCSU was Maurice Hooper who had a game high 24 points. Despite his 24 points, Smith also had four other players in double figures. David Sanders had 14 points and six rebounds while Ryan Scott chipped in 13. Terry Givens and Edmund Rainey's stats mirrored each other by contributing 12 points each.
Shaw falls to 3-22 overall and 1-17 in the CIAA. Johnson C. Smith improves to 14-8 overall, and 12-6 in league play.
Shaw moves on to play Virginia State on Feb. 20 in Petersburg, Va., while Johnson C. Smith will travel to Fayetteville State on the same day in an all-important divisional match-up.
