Three teams now 2-2 in the Western Division

Raleigh, NC - JCSU let a golden opportunity slip away with a 27-9 loss to Saint Augustine's College Saturday afternoon at the Broughton High School Stadium. The Golden Bulls drop to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA, while the Falcons improve to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

St. Augustine's put 14 points on the scoreboard in the first half with two rushing touchdowns. Arnold Mullins scored the first with a nine yard dash 8:37 into the first quarter. Walter Sanders had a six yard TD run in the second quarter to put the Falcons up 14-0. Sophomore place kicker Julius Wright (Fort Worth, TX) hit a 32 yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining before halftime for JCSU's only first half points.

After two more field goals and a three yard touchdown reception from Joaquin Green to Richard Abney, Johnson C. Smith trailed 27-3 in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) connected with senior receiver Kenny Strickland (San Jose, CA) for a 19 yard touchdown pass. That was the only touchdown for J. C. Smith and the team failed to convert a two-point attempt which accounted for the 27-9 final.

The Golden Bulls had 141 yards of total offense compared to 415 total offensive yards for St. Augustine's. JCSU finished with -2 total rushing yards, mainly due to lost yardage on sacks. Carter was sacked five times; twice by linebacker Mark Hall and three times by defensive end Marcus Crump. However, Carter did complete 13 of his 17 pass attempts with one touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Perrin Carr IV (Brandywine, MD) had a game-high 11 tackles (6 solo, 5 assists) and one force fumble.

Coming into this match-up, JCSU was tied with Fayetteville State University for second in the CIAA Western Division. After today's loss and a Fayetteville State win over Shaw University (29-28), JCSU now moves to third in the division. Johnson C. Smith will return to Irwin Belk Complex to face Fayetteville State on Saturday, October 17th for the 2009 Homecoming Game. This will also mark the last home game for the Golden Bulls this season. JCSU Athletics will recognize the senior student-athletes, the 1969 CIAA Champion Golden Bulls team, and legendary head football coach Eddie C. McGirt during the homecoming contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the IBC.
