Queen City Classic at Brayboy Gym November 15-16

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team will open their season with the Queen City Classic in Brayboy Gymnasium November 15-16, 2009. The Lady Golden Bulls will also continue to support the breast cancer awareness initiative by accepting donations in exchange for a pair of pink Crocs footwear.
Spectators in attendance are asked to make a donation of at least one dollar in order to receive a pair of Crocs. The Queen City Classic will tip off on Sunday, November 15th in Brayboy Gym. Institutions in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg and surrounding areas will participate (Pfeiffer University, Queen University (NC), and Wingate University), Queens (NC) and Wingate play at 2:00 pm, followed by JCSU and Pfeiffer at 4:00 pm.

On Monday, November 16th, Wingate and Pfeiffer start off at 4:00 pm and the Lady Golden Bulls take on Queens (NC) at 6:00 pm. The coaches and classic committee will select an all-classic team, QC Classic most valuable player, and coaches' awards.

All proceeds from the Crocs' donations will go to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer FundTM is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

"This is an extension of breast cancer awareness month,” says JCSU head women's basketball coach Vanessa Taylor. “We know October is breast cancer awareness month and the WBCA does a great job with their Pink Zone campaign in February, but we figured why wait until February, attention needs to be brought to breast cancer and its prevention year-round and our season opener is a great opportunity.”
“The University and the athletics department are behind these efforts 100 percent, "says Director of Athletics Steve Joyner, Sr. "It's great to see coaches think outside of the box and do something positive for the community at large.”

The reigning CIAA Tournament champion Lady Golden Bulls are 21-3 at home since 2007.
