Demetria Bell had a double-double of 14 rebounds and 10 points in the 52-50 win vs Queens (NC)
Charlotte, NC - The JCSU women's basketball goes unbeaten in the 2009 Queen City Classic after a 52-50 victory over Queens University Monday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. J.C. Smith improves to 2-0 in the overall standings and the Lady Royals fall to 0-2 overall.
Queens held a commanding 24-8 lead with a little less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. Junior guard
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) hit a three pointer that sparked a 9-0 JCSU run. At the 1:44 mark, the Lady Golden Bulls trailed Queens 24-17.
The Lady Royals outscored Johnson C. Smith 30-19 at halftime. Queens had better shooting percentage in every area on the floor. JCSU shot 25% from the field (9-36), 16.7% from the three point line (1-6), and went 0-2 from the free throw line. Senior forward
Demetria Bell (Indianapolis, IN) had a team-high nine points and six rebounds.
"We needed to stop giving up points in the paint, defend the perimeter, and force turnovers," says JCSU head coach Vanessa Taylor.
With 12:24 remaining in the second half, JCSU tied the game at 34-34. Sophomore forward
April Smith (Auburn, AL) was fouled on a lay-up and completed a three point play from the free throw line. After a rough first half from the free throw, the game was won from the line. Queens had no timeouts in the final seconds. JCSU held a 52-50 lead after two made free throws from senior guard
Wendy Stywalt (Charlotte, NC). Queens had to take the ball out from the opponent end of the court with 0.03 seconds left.
J.C. Smith claimed their first 2-0 start to the season after the inbounds since 2006. Junior guard
Shontanette Shaw (Raeford, NC) received the Queen City Classic All-Academic Award for the highest team grade point average. Bell and Stywalt finished with double digit point totals and All-QCC team honors. Bell had 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Stywalt produced 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Erin Goldner and Marissa Hudley scored 15 and 14 points, respectively for the Lady Royals.
JCSU returns to
Stephen Joyner, Sr. Court inside Brayboy Gymnasium on Saturday, November 21st versus Wingate University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
