Lady Golden Bulls off to their best start under Coach Taylor

Charlotte, NC - The Lady Golden Bulls basketball team remains unbeaten at home this season after a 48-44 win over UNC-Pembroke Wednesday afternoon inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 5-0 overall, 1-0 CIAA, while the Lady Braves fall to 2-3 in the standings.

The first half started off slow. Pembroke scored the first basket (3-pointer from Kristen Hobbs) four minutes into the period. Despite only shooting 27.6% from the field (8-29) and 50% from the free throw line (3-6), Johnson C. Smith held a 19-17 lead at halftime.

UNCP shot 33.3% from the floor (5-15) and 83.3% from the charity stripe in the opening half. JaToya Kemp led the way with seven points and 5-of-6 shooting at the FT line.

The second half was tightly contested featuring seven lead changes. The game came down to free throws and a crucial UNCP turnover. Junior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) converted on a lay-up to give JCSU a 46-43 advantage with 1:34 left to play. Both teams failed to score on their next offensive possession.

In the closing seconds, Chevoya Jackson brought the ball down the court was striped and turned the ball over to senior forward Demetria Bell (Indianapolis, IN). The Lady Braves were forced to foul and junior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to seal the game.

Kemp finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Braves. Hobbs pitched in with 11 points and two assists in a losing effort.

Bell had her second double-double performance of the season with 17 rebounds, 15 points, and three steals. Neely made her presence felt on both ends with 10 points, five boards, three blocks, and two steals. Senior guard Shakira Clarke (Toronto, Canada) and junior guard Shontanette Shaw (Raeford, NC) each had six points to round out the top JCSU scorers.

The Lady Golden Bulls ended the game shooting 31.6% from the floor (18-57) and 64.7% from the free throw line (11-17).

JCSU will travel to Lincoln, Pennsylvania to face Lincoln University on Saturday, November 28th. The Lady Golden Bulls are scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm inside Manuel Rivero Hall.
