THREE GOLDEN BULLS NAMED ALL-CIAA FOR THE 2008-09 SEASON
Feb. 18, 2009
Hampton, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches Associations have selected the honorees of the 2009 All-CIAA Teams and Players of the Year. Three Golden Bulls were named to the All-conference team and junior forward James Dillard was named 2009 Men's Defensive Player of the year.
Junior forward James Dillard earned Men's Defensive Player of the Year for his performance this season. Dillard, a native of Apex, NC, is listed at the top of the conference in blocked shots (50 total), averaging 2.27 blocks per game and ranks in the CIAA's top five rebounders averaging 8.2 boards per game (180 total). Dillard is also third in the nation in field goal percentage (69.1%) and 24th in blocked shots.
Dillard's production on the offensive side also warranted an All-CIAA selection this year. For the majority of the 2008-09 season, Dillard has been the second leading scorer in the conference. Battling injury towards the latter end of the schedule have limited his minutes, causing Dillard to drop to number three in the conference in scoring (averaging 17.8 points per game). Both defensive player of the year and all-conference honors are a first in Dillard's collegiate career.
Senior guard Ryan Scott was another Golden Bull selected to the All-CIAA team this season. Scott, a native of Reston, VA, has elevated his play down the stretch and was in the conversation for CIAA Player of the Year. Scott has been the leading scorer for JCSU in six of their last eight games. His performance has lead to him surpassing teammate James Dillard as the second leading scorer in the conference.
Scott is averaging 17.9 points per game; he ranked first in the conference in three-point field goals made (avg. 2.9 per game), second in steals (avg. 1.9 per game), sixth in assists (avg. 2.9 per game), and sixth in free throw percentage (76.7%). This is Scott's first all-conference selection.
Junior forward Jerry Hollis was the final All-CIAA selection from Johnson C. Smith. Hollis, a native of Charlotte, NC, joins the all-conference team for the second consecutive season. Hollis is ranked in the top 15 in seven offensive and defensive categories in the CIAA, including scoring (15th - avg. 11.8 ppg), blocked shots (4th - avg. 1.1 per game), field goal percentage (6th - 54.3%), and rebounds (8th - avg. 6.4 per game).
The All-CIAA Teams and Players of the Year will be honored at the Women's and Men's Tip-Off Luncheon on February 24th.
