Ryan Carter passed for 2 TDs, rushed for 1, and tallied 327 yards of total offense in a 27-14 JCSU win over Edward Waters
Kingsland, GA - The Golden Bulls football team claimed their first victory of the season over Edward Waters College 27-14 in the sixth annual Ralph Bunche Classic Saturday afternoon played inside the Chris Gilman Stadium. JCSU improves to 1-2 overall, while the Tigers drop to 0-2 for the season.
In the opening quarter, JCSU got on the scoreboard first with a one yard dash into the end zone by junior quarterback
Ryan Carter. The touchdown run topped off a nine play, 56-yard drive that last a little over four minutes. The Golden Bulls missed the extra point due to a botched snap on the wet field, making the score 6-0.
Edward Waters managed to move the ball down field with their ground game on the following possession. But the Tigers fumbled the ball at the goal line and senior linebacker
Michael Morgan recovered in the end zone for a touchback. EWC would eventually score in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal by Bertra Balfour.
J.C. Smith held a narrow 6-3 lead going into halftime. The statistics were pretty even at the half, both teams had eight first downs. The Golden Bulls ran 33 plays for 124 yards of total offense and the Tigers ran 30 plays for 115 yards of offense. However, Edward Waters committed two turnovers, including an interception by sophomore cornerback
Lamarr Person.
The Golden Bulls struck again in the third with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Carter to senior receiver
Kenny Strickland in the right corner. JCSU went ahead 13-3 with the score. The Tigers tacked on another three points with a 26-yard field goal to draw within a touchdown 13-6.
JCSU kept the pressure on Edward Waters, driving back down the field in seven plays for a touchdown. Followed by another Golden Bull touchdown drive, where Carter found junior tight end
Markus Gray in the back of end zone to go up 27-6. The Tigers scored a meaningless touchdown and two-point conversion in the closing seconds to account for the 27-14 final.
Ryan Carter was named Offensive Player of the Game; racking up 327 yards of total offense (200 passing, 127 rushing) and three touchdowns. Freshman tailback
Dedrick Anderson had 52 yards rushing on 14 carries and a touchdown. Junior receiver
Jeremy Franklin caught seven passes for 105 yards.
The victory marks the first win for JCSU in 2009 and first year coach
Steven Aycock. "It's always a good thing to get a win, especially the first one," said Coach Aycock. "Now we have got to build on this success and carry the momentum into our next game."
Johnson C. Smith will return home to face CIAA foe Virginia Union University on Saturday, September 19th inside the Irwin Belk Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
