Mauranda Elliott (1) had 12 kills and Rashondae Henderson (8) had 11 digs, but JCSU come up short in a 3-2 loss to Salem
Winston-Salem, NC - The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team was mowed down by Salem College in a thrilling five-game rally match Tuesday evening on the campus of Salem. The Spirits beat JCSU in five games (24-26, 25-15, 25-9, 22-25, 15-7). Salem improves to 1-0 on the season, while JCSU drops to 0-2.
J.C. Smith won the first game in extra play (26-24). Unfortunately, the Lady Golden Bulls let the next two games slip away (25-15, 25-9). JCSU came back to win a close fourth set (25-22) and take the match to a fifth and deciding game. Salem won the fifth set in convincing fashion (15-7).

Mauranda Elliott (Tabor City, NC) led JCSU with 12 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore setter
Alexis Webb (Durham, NC) passed out a team-high 29 assists in the match. Junior outside hitter
Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, MO) had a solid defensive performance with 11 digs.
Sara Maher was pivotal as the setter with 40 assists in the match. Christine Tillman led Salem with 16 kills and 3 blocks.
JCSU will return to action at the Converse Volleyball Tournament hosted by Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. The Lady Golden Bulls will face the host Converse College on Friday, September 4th at 2:00 pm and Virginia Intermont College at 6:00 pm. Then on Saturday, September 5th, JCSU squares off against UVA-Wise at 12 noon and a rematch of the season opener with Concord College at 2:00 pm.
