Box Score
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team snatched an 86-69 win from Lincoln (PA) University Saturday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU earns their second win against Lincoln (PA) this season and improve to 9-5 overall, while the Lions drop to 2-11 in the standings.
Senior forward
Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, NC) was the x-factor in this match-up. Hollis finished with a career-high 32 points, 19 rebounds (12 defensive), and five assists. At halftime, Hollis already had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards.
J.C. Smith led 40-29 at the end of the first half. The Golden Bulls shot 47.1% from the field (16-34) compared to 32.3% shooting in the opening from Lincoln (PA).
With nine minutes on the clock in the second half, JCSU held a 64-54 lead. The Lions sparked an 11-1 scoring run over the next two minutes to tie the game at 65. J.C. Smith took a timeout, regrouped, and eventually pushed the lead back out to double digits. Despite the tie, Lincoln never had the lead in the second half.
“I felt we learned from our shortcomings at Elizabeth City,” said JCSU head coach #Stephen Joyner, Sr.# “Lincoln fought back, but we were able to gain our composure and play as a unit on the defensive end. They were in foul trouble in the second, so we slowed the pace, attacked, and counted on making our free throws down the stretch.”
Senior forward
Brian Mobley (Charlotte, NC) concluded the contest with 15 points, including a 5-for-5 night from the free throw line before fouling out late in the second. Senior forwards
James Dillard (Apex, NC), Dante' Drummer (Norfolk, VA), junior guard
Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA), and sophomore guard
James Otey (Roanoke, VA) each had seven points.
Darren Clark and Damian Hyman shouldered the scoring load for Lincoln with 19 points apiece.
Johnson C. Smith returns to the court to hopefully avenge a loss earlier this season (11/30/09) against Bowie State University on Monday, January 18th. Brayboy Gymnasium will be filled with JCSU navy blue on Bull's Eye Blue Night. The Golden Bull faithful are asking to help give the Bulldogs the “blues” by wearing your blue for this 7:30 pm tip-off.
