Junior guard Ronald Thornhill hit six three-pointers and scored a team-high 20 points in the 88-57 win over VSU
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dominated Virginia State in their first game after the Holiday break 88-57 Saturday afternoon inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA, while VSU falls to 1-10 in the standings and 1-6 in the conference.
J.C. Smith led from start to finish in this contest. The Trojans were outscored 43-32 in the first half and 45-25 in the second. JCSU shot 55.7% from the field (34-61), 46% from the three point line (6-13), and out-rebounded Virginia State 41-31.
Junior guard
Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had a team-high 20 points with five assists. Thornhill shot 70% from the floor (7-10), including 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
Brian Mobley (Charlotte, NC) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, followed by senior forward
Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, NC) with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Sophomore center
Michael Cooper (New Rochelle, NY) came off the bench and added 12 points.
Brandon Macklin carried the load for the Trojans with 23 points and eight rebounds.
“We played a lot more focused and we operated like a cohesive unit tonight,” said JCSU head coach
Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Our guard play stepped it up and we'll need to see more of that to continue to be successful. Now we have to work on being consistent as we will face tougher competition, especially within the conference.”
JCSU returns to the court in CIAA action on Monday, January 4, 2010 against Virginia Union University. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm inside the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, NC.
