Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team fell to Virginia State University 59-50 Saturday afternoon in conference action at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA, while VSU improves to 9-1 overall and remains unbeaten in the conference at 6-0. Johnson C. Smith (No. 18) and Virginia State (No. 19) came into this match-up as the only CIAA schools ranked in the Top 25 USA Today/ESPN Division II Poll.
The Lady Trojans played aggressive in the first half on their way to a 34-26 lead. JCSU turned the ball over 12 times, shot 38.5 % (10-26), and was out-rebounded by Virginia State 24-17 in the initial period. Sophomore guard
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) shouldered the offensive scoring with a team-high eight points in the first.
JCSU made it very interesting in the second half with some sharp shooting from sophomore guard
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD). Quattlebaum was 3-of-5 from the three point line in the second and she made her only two free throws attempts at the 7:22 mark to tie the game at 48-48.
With less than a minute and a half remaining and trailing 52-50, the Lady Golden Bulls could not inbound and were hit with a five second violation. From that point Virginia State held JCSU scoreless, while converting on 70% (7-10) of their free throws to close the game.
J.C. Smith lost the rebounding battle 45-36, committed 26 turnovers, and only shot 33.3% (8-24) in the final period.
Quattlebaum finished with a game-high 14 points, followed by Jones with 10 points and five rebounds. Senior forward
Demetria Bell (Indianapolis, IN) had nine points and seven boards.
Rhon'Neisha Taylor led the Lady Trojans with 11 points and six rebounds.
Johnson C. Smith returns to the court on Monday, January 4, 2010 in conference action versus Virginia Union University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm inside the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, NC.
