JCSU AND CHOWAN BASKETBALL COACHES WILL UNITE TO FIGHT CANCER
Competition with a Cause
Charlotte, NC – Johnson C. Smith University head women's basketball coach Vanessa Taylor and head men's basketball coach
Stephen Joyner, Sr. will be wearing sneakers with their dress attire when the Golden Bulls host Chowan University on Saturday, January 30th, not necessarily for comfort, but in support of the Coaches versus Cancer campaign.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
“This is a very important cause and Johnson C. Smith Athletics is in full support of raising awareness and funds towards fighting this disease that has plagued our society,” said Joyner.”The American Cancer Society and the NABC have been doing great work with their efforts and I hope our contribution can help make an impact.”
Sponsors, faculty and staff, alumni, and fans in attendance are being challenged to pledge a dollar amount for every three points made by the Golden Bulls during the men's and women's game on Saturday. Both the men's and women's coaches of Chowan University will also be on the sidelines in dress attire and sneakers.
The American Cancer Society and the NABC adopted this concept in 1993 and transformed it into a nationwide effort to unite coaches across the country in the common mission to provide help and hope to all people facing cancer. Today, more than 2,000 Division I, II, and III college coaches are involved in the program. Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $50 million since its inception to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease. Additionally, more than 100 high school coaches also participate in the program.
“This is a unique opportunity for us to get behind an excellent cause and teach our student-athletes that serving our communities is much more important than a competition,” said Taylor. “Cancer has affected so many of our nation's basketball coaches and their families; we're proud to participate and hopefully make a difference in the fight against cancer.”
Action will be intense with both JCSU and Chowan fighting to move up in the CIAA Western Division. Tip-off for the Lady Golden Bulls is scheduled for 5:30 pm, followed by the men's game at 7:30 pm inside Brayboy Gymnasium. Saturday's game will also have a WHITE-OUT theme (fans wearing all white) and JCSU alumni basketball players will be in attendance and recognized by JCSU Athletics.
