Raleigh, NC – The JCSU Lady Golden Bulls basketball team lost steam and their first CIAA divisional game to Saint Augustine's College 71-54 Thursday afternoon inside Emery Gymnasium. Johnson C. Smith moves to 14-5 overall, 7-5 CIAA, and 1-1 in the Western Division; while the Lady Falcons improve to 11-7 overall, 9-4 conference, and 1-0 in the division. 

The first half can be broken down by scoring runs on both sides. St. Augustine's jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes. Senior forward/guard Sheria Hatcher (Flint, MI) put JCSU on the scoreboard with a lay-up plus the “and one” after being was fouled on the play. J.C. Smith received back-to-back three pointers from sophomore guards Terica Jones (Raleigh, NC) and Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD). 

JCSU was up 22-12 midway through the first. The Lady Falcons cut into the lead and Johnson C. Smith took a timeout up 24-21 with 6:34 remaining. After the timeout, St. Augustine's closed out the half on a 17-4 run. The Lady Golden Bulls trailed 38-28 going into the locker room at the break. 

SAC shot 47% from the field (15-32) in the first, compared to just 36.4% (12-33) for J.C. Smith. The Lady Falcons won the points in the paint battle 26-14 and points off turnovers 13-3. 

The Lady Golden Bulls failed to recover in the second half, trailing by as much as 22 (67-45) with 4:49 left to play. St. Augustine's continued to maintain control of the paint (22-10 scoring differential) and capitalize off turnovers (10-2 points off T/O) in the second period. JCSU was outscored 33-26 in the second, en route to a 71-54 road loss. 

J.C. Smith finished shooting 32.3% from the floor (21-65) and 57% from the free throw line (8-14).
The Lady Falcons had five players with double digit point totals led by LeKeisha White with 15. Keyona Bryant contributed with 14 points and eight rebounds. 

Junior forward/center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) had a team-high 10 points and 11 boards. Senior guard Shakira Clarke pitched in with eight points. 

Johnson C. Smith will be looking to bounce back when they return home to face Chowan University on Saturday, January 30th. Saturday's game marks the JCSU Coaches vs. Cancer contest. 

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Both the coaching staff for JCSU and Chowan will be on the sidelines in dress attire and sneakers. 

Tip-off in this CIAA Western Divisional match-up is slated for 5:30 pm inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Golden Bulls earned a 55-47 victory over Chowan in Murfreesboro, NC earlier this season (12/6/09).
