JCSU still searching for first CIAA victory this season

Box Score

Richmond, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University football team failed to produce enough offense against Virginia Union University in a 44-21 loss Saturday afternoon on Hovey Field. JCSU moves to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA, while the Panthers improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Virginia Union put points on the scoreboard after a turnover in the first quarter. Junior punter Tyler Rabb (Shelby, NC) had a punt blocked and recovered by Damon Ramsey for VUU at the JCSU two yard line. After three plays, English-McGlone crossed the goal line for the Panthers. VA Union missed the extra point kick attempt for a 6-0 lead.

Another blocked punt placed VA Union in position for a quick score. With a little less than four minutes remaining in the first, Rabb's punt was blocked and recovered at the JCSU one yard line. This time Tarian Donaldson entered the endzone on a one yard dash. VUU could not connect on a two-point conversion pass attempt.

Before the close of the first quarter, the Golden Bulls completed a nine play, 69 yard drive with a touchdown. Sophomore running back Joshua James (Varnville, SC) scored off a three yard rush to make the Golden Bulls trail 12-7.

Unfortunately, JCSU would not score another touchdown until the third quarter. By that time, Virginia Union had scored three more TDs all with a failed extra point attempt. James scored his second touchdown of the evening, completing an 11-play, 79 yard drive. Up 30-14, the Panthers produced more points after a 22 yard touchdown run from Jeremy Washington.

Both teams scored one more TD to account for the final score, including a two yard rush from senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) with 8:09 remaining in the contest.

Turnovers plagued J.C. Smith; Carter threw three interceptions and JCSU lost one of its two fumbles. Johnson C. Smith totaled more offense with 231 yards in the air and 212 on the ground, compared to 375 total offensive yards for VUU. The Golden Bulls punched it in the endzone on three of their four trips to the red zone; VA Union was six for eight in the red.

Sophomore running back Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) rushed for a game-high 103 yards off 14 carries. Senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) caught six balls for 115 yards. Junior defensive lineman Rashad Dukes had six tackles followed by senior tackle Tyreece Williams (Shelby, NC) with four tackles including a sack.

Johnson C. Smith will attempt to snap their four-game winless skid on Saturday, October 23rd against St. Augustine's College for the 2010 Homecoming Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm inside Irwin Belk Complex.
