Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over West Virginia State University over the weekend at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. JCSU improves to 1-4 overall during their non-conference fall schedule.
The Golden Bulls swept doubles play for a 3-0 advance in the match. Juniors
McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and
Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) topped Andrew Barr and Macon Walling 8-1 in number one doubles action. Senior
Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and junior
Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) defeated Brian Wooten and Lee Painter 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles spot. Senior
Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) and freshman
Dion Chever won the third doubles match by forfeit.
Butts, Bean, and Jones won in number one, two, and three singles competition, respectively. Painter edged Smith (6-4, 6-3) in the fourth singles match. Chever beat Brett Mannon (6-0, 6-1) in the number five spot, followed by a victory from Stuckey in number six singles due to forfeit.
J.C. Smith returns to action in the spring against Augusta State University on Wednesday, February 9th. Match play is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
