First divisional loss this season for JCSU

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team fell 49-3 to Winston-Salem State University Saturday evening inside American Legion Memorial Stadium. J.C. Smith moves to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA, while the Rams improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

On the opening drive, the Golden Bulls used 11 plays for 57 yards to make it to the WSSU two yard line. However, after three consecutive rushing attempts including a fourth down attempt, JCSU failed to enter the end zone. Both teams stalled on their next offensive series.

The Rams eventually put together eight plays for a 90 yard drive, which resulted in a touchdown. Nicholas Cooper scored on his second rushing attempt inside the five yard line for a one-yard TD. The first quarter came to a close 7-0. Unfortunately, Johnson C. Smith allowed three offensive touchdowns in the second quarter and failed to score points of their own.

After trailing 28-0 at the half, the Golden Bulls got on the board in the third with a 22-yard field goal from junior place kicker Tyler Rabb (Shelby, NC). Those would be the only points for JCSU in the contest.

Winston-Salem produced 491 yards of total offense, including 202 on the ground. Senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) had his worse statistical game of the season completing 18 of 32 for 155 yards and two interceptions. Senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) had five catches for 37 yards, followed by freshman receiver Chrishawn Rhyne (Winston-Salem, NC) with three grabs for 35 yards.

Carter led the team in rushing with 50 yards on the ground; the team had 69 yards rushing.

Junior linebacker Quinton Toomer (Atlanta, GA) led the team in tackles with 10 (9 solo) and one tackle for a loss of five yards. Junior defensive back Darius Johnson (Atlanta, GA) collected eight tackles for JCSU.

The Golden Bulls return to Irwin Belk Complex for their next CIAA contest against Shaw University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm on McGirt Field. JCSU will recognize their sponsors and faculty/staff in an appreciation day for the game.
