Fayetteville, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team suffered a devastating 64-6 loss at the hands of reigning conference champions Fayetteville State University in a CIAA Southern Division contest Saturday afternoon inside Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. JCSU moves to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the CIAA, while the Broncos improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference. 

In the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Robert Johnson (Winston-Salem, NC) found senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) with a screen pass on the left side. Franklin broke loose for 73 yards and took the ball to the FSU three yard line. After two rushing attempts, Johnson connected with junior tight end Tyler Shiver (Lawrenceville, GA) on a play action pass for the Golden Bulls' first and only touchdown. 

Unfortunately, J.C. Smith trailed 43-0 before producing their first score. Fayetteville State's Austin Turner nailed a 20 yard field goal for the game's initial score. Junior punter Tyler Rabb (Shelby, NC) attempted a punt from his own 10 yard line that was blocked by Alexander Monk. The ball went out of bounds and the Broncos earned a safety. FSU quarterback Robert Benjamin hit Dallin Gray with a five yard TD pass for the first touchdown and from there things just snowballed. 

Fayetteville State tallied 534 yards of total offense (346 rushing, 188 passing), while only allowing 271 yards to the Golden Bulls. The Broncos had 20 first downs compared to 11 for JCSU, despite being flagged for 14 times and giving up 220 yards on those penalties. 

Senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) completed 10 of his 19 pass attempts for 96 yards and one interception. Carter also rushed for 32 yards, along with junior running back Archie Barrow(Winston-Salem, NC). Johnson checked in towards the end of the third quarter and threw for 78 yards on three-of-eight passing with one TD and one interception. 

Franklin finished with three catches for 97 yards. Junior linebacker Perrin Carr IV (Brandywine, MD) had a game-high 12 tackles (8 assists), including one for a loss. 

Meanwhile, FSU's Benjamin was the player of the game with 170 yards passing and 108 yards on the ground for six touchdowns (three passing, three rushing). Richard Medlin rushing for a game-high 175 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown. 

The Golden Bulls will look to rebound in their season finale match-up with Livingstone College for the annual Commemorative Classic on Saturday, November 6th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm inside Memorial Stadium in uptown Charlotte, NC.
