JCSU started off the first half with a slow pace. The Lady Royals jumped out to a 5-0 advantage until senior center
Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) finished under the basket for the first Lady Golden Bull score. Half way through the first, J.C. Smith trailed Queens 13-8 before kicking into another gear. A huge scoring run for JCSU started with junior guard
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) completing an old fashion three-point play with a lay-up and made free throw.
The Lady Royals held a 13-11 lead after the “and one”. Johnson C. Smith would soon tie the game at 15 apiece with a lay-up from junior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Ft. Myers, FL) with 7:36 remaining in the first. Gamble also scored the go-ahead bucket (19-17) inside the paint with 5:09 on the clock. The Lady Golden Bull did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Johnson C. Smith went into the locker room at the half with a 29-17 lead, thanks in part to a 21-4 scoring run to close the first period. JCSU shot 34.5% from the field (10-29) compared to just 27.6% (8-29) from the Lady Royals. The Lady Golden Bulls out-rebounded Queens 23-16, outscored them in the paint 16-6, and in the second chance points 6-0.
Gamble had a team-high eight points off 4-of-5 shooting (80%) and three rebounds at the half. Neely and junior guard
Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN) each had six points with six and four rebounds, respectively.
In the second half, Queens made a strong push to try and capture the game. After a timeout at the 3:41 mark, Marissa Hudley scored on back to back offensive possessions for the Lady Royals. Queens still trailed 58-54 and were moving up court on another offensive possession when Price made a key steal at half court and drew a foul. Price connected on one free throw to grow the JCSU lead to 59-54.
Price made yet another essential defensive play with a steal then dished to Cunningham, who was fouled. Two free throws from Cunningham and one from Neely sealed the deal for the Lady Golden Bulls. Johnson C. Smith won the battle of the boards 51-43 over Queens.
Three Lady Golden Bulls scored double figures and two had double digit rebounds; including Gamble with a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds (9 defensive). Quattlebaum and Price led the team with 11 points each, also seven boards from Price. Neely fell a point shy of a double-double with nine and 10 rebounds, also a game-high four blocks.
