Lady Golden Bulls sweep Queens this season

Box Score vs. Queens

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team rolls past Queens University of Charlotte 61-54 on Tuesday afternoon inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU remains unbeaten at 5-0 overall after their second victory over Queens this season, while the Lady Royals move to 1-3 in the standings.

The Lady Golden Bulls picked up a win over Queens earlier this season (11/17/10) by an almost identical merge (62-54) in the Ovens Athletic Center. Jessica Lewis hit the first bucket of the game in the first 30 seconds for the Lady Royals only lead of the contest. Junior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) scored in the paint on the next two JCSU offensive possessions to capture the advantage. JCSU did not relinquish the lead or control for the remainder of the contest, despite a gallant effort from Queens.

J.C. Smith held a 23-9 advantage with 6:07 on the clock before halftime. Queens burst out with a quick 10-0 scoring run during a dry spell for JCSU over the next two and half minutes. Freshman forward Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) and Gamble worked the post by grabbing boards and scoring in the paint to close out the half. Queens trailed 29-21 at the break.

Johnson C. Smith shot 40% (14-35) from the field, but only 27% (3-11) from the free throw line. Gamble had a game-high eight points off 4-of-5 shooting with six rebounds in the first half. The backcourt of senior guard Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY) and junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) each had six points at the break. JCSU out rebounded Queens 27-18 and outscored them 12-4 in the paint and 10-2 in second chance points.

The Lady Royals made another strong surge in the second half and eventually drew within three (57-54) with 4:08 remaining. However, junior guard Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) stepped up with a key jumper along with free throws from Gamble to seal the victory for Johnson C. Smith.

JCSU was relentless on the glass with a 54-39 rebounding advantage over Queens. Both teams finished shooting 36% from the floor, but the Lady Golden Bulls beat Queens 22-12 inside the paint.
Gamble finished with her fourth double-double in five games with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Price followed with 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Cunningham controlled the tempo of the contest with nine points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Shakaria Hamlin and Jessica Lewis led the Lady Royals with 15 points and 12 points, respectively.

Johnson C. Smith returns to Brayboy Gymnasium for a non-conference game with Belmont Abbey College on Saturday, December 4th at 5:30 p.m. Belmont Abbey is currently 0-4 with a game against Coker to play on Thursday.
