Box Score vs. Livingstone
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team snapped a six-game winless streak with a 26-13 victory against Livingstone College in the 2nd Annual Commemorative Classic on Saturday afternoon inside American Legion Memorial Stadium. JCSU improves to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the CIAA, while the Blue Bears conclude the year at 0-11 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
After a well-attended two-day educational symposium, several media appearances, and an extraordinary hall of fame banquet it was finally time for kickoff. The Golden Bulls scored first late in the first quarter. After a short punt, Johnson C. Smith began a drive inside the LC 31. Senior quarterback
Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) ended a six play, 30 yard drive with an 11-yard dash into the end zone with 4:50 remaining in the first.
Surprisingly, Livingstone responded with a 12 play, 69-yard touchdown drive of their own. The Blue Bears entered this contest having only scored 35 total points in 10 games, with eight being their most points in a single game this season. However, Levon Stanley scored a touchdown on a nine yard rush to tie the score 7-7 in the second quarter.
On the next offensive series, Carter found senior receiver
Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) for a 59 yard touchdown strike to put the Golden Bulls ahead once again. Livingstone blocked the extra point kick attempt for a 13-7 count. Both offenses had a stalemate until towards the end of the half.
Once again Carter made a big play, this time to freshman receiver
Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC) who caught a block and turned on the jets for a 75 yard touchdown reception. The Blue Bears special team was disciplined enough to block yet another extra point attempt. The first half came to a close with JCSU up 19-7.
The Golden Bulls jumped out to a 26-7 lead in the third when Carter scrambled for his second TD. J.C. Smith scored after an eight play, 65 yard drive on a 22-yard rush from Carter. Livingstone scored a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter. Despite the loss, the Blue Bears scored their most points in an individual game this season.
In his final game in the Gold and Blue, Carter threw for 283 yards on 14-of-23 passing and rushing for 112 yards with four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). Carter also earned the Commemorative Classic Most Outstanding Player Award for his performance. Capers had a game-high 119 yards off four catches with one TD, followed by Franklin with three catches, 83 yards, and one touchdown.
Tevin Mishoe earned the Most Outstanding Award for Livingstone with 82 yards rushing off 19 attempts and a touchdown.
Johnson C. Smith ends the season on a high note with their first conference and divisional win, snapping a winless streak, and maintaining a flawless record (2-0) in the Commemorative Classic.
