Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball will host Virginia State University on Thursday, December 16th inside Brayboy Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bulls enter this contest 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA after their 80-77 victory over St. Paul's on December 13th. Virginia State is currently 1-4 overall, 0-1 in the conference with a game on Wednesday, December 15th against Fayetteville State University at home.
JCSU snapped a four-game winless streak with their victory Monday over the SPC Tigers. J.C. Smith is averaging 75.9 points per game, including 6.9 made three-pointers per contest. Senior guard
Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) has started in six of the seven games this season as the shooting guard and ranks 2nd in the CIAA for three-point field made (averaging 3.8). In addition, the Golden Bulls are 2nd in the conference for assists, averaging 16 per game.
Meanwhile, the Trojans have lost their last four games including a 66-46 loss to Virginia Union University in Madison Square Garden on December 4th. Virginia State is averaging 62 points per game and allowing 75 points to their opponents. VSU is ranked 12th out of 13 in field goal percentage, shooting 36.5% from the floor. Brandon Plummer is the top scorer for Virginia State with an 11-point per game average.
Thornhill scored his 1,000th career point against St. Paul's and he's second for JCSU in scoring with 16.4 points per game. Sophomore guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) had a heroic performance in the 80-77 victory over SPC with a career-high 35 points. Parks leads the Golden Bulls in scoring with a 17-point per game average.
This will be the final CIAA competition for Johnson C. Smith before the holiday break. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
