JCSU earns back-to-back wins

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team picked up a 95-86 overtime win against Virginia State University on Thursday evening in Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 4-4 overall, 2-0 in the CIAA, and 4-1 at home; while the Trojans move to 1-6 after their sixth consecutive defeat.

The story in this one was sophomore guard Trevin Parks' (Hickory, NC) 35-point performance. The Golden Bulls held a 44-39 lead at halftime. JCSU shot 55.6% from the floor and 84.6% from the free throw line. Virginia State lost the battle on the glass 19-13 in the first half as well. Parks had 17 points in the opening off 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Trojans regrouped on offense in the second half and eventually took the lead late. VSU held a 77-71 lead with 2:52 on the clock after a three pointer from D'Angelo Johnson. Three JCSU free throws cut the lead in half, two from sophomore center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) and one from Parks. After a VSU turnover, junior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) splashed a three to tie the game 77-77 with 42 seconds left to play.

Virginia State drew whistles late and converted on three of four free throws for an 80-77 advantage with five seconds remaining. Parks caught the inbound, dribbled to the right wing, and launched a buzzer beater three to send the game into overtime locked up 80 apiece.

Parks elevated JCSU to victory in overtime, scoring 14 of the team's 15 points in OT. He went 11-of-14 from the free throw line and nailed a three. Parks matches his career-high with a second consecutive 35-point scoring night. Senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) chipped in 12 points and two assists. Senior forward Earl Jackson (Temple Hills, MD) and Boyd each had 12 points, Jackson also grabbed nine boards.

The Golden Bulls face one more opponent before the holiday break on Saturday, December 18th against the Apprentice School of Virginia. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
