Johnson C. Smith 3-0 at home this year

Charlotte, NC – The Lady Golden Bulls basketball team will face Belmont Abbey College on Saturday, December 4th at 5:30 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 2:00 p.m. tip-off time. The men's basketball team will also face Belmont Abbey at 7:30 p.m.; both games will take place inside Brayboy Gymnasium.

Johnson C. Smith women's basketball has gotten off to a 5-0 start, after their 61-54 over Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday evening at home. The Lady Crusaders are 0-4 so far this season with one loss in conference (Conference Carolinas). These two teams last played in the 2008 Queen City Classic hosted by Wingate University. Belmont Abbey picked up a 57-49 win on the neutral court to open that season, meanwhile JCSU went on to win the CIAA Championship in that same year.

“Belmont will definitely be another solid challenge for our basketball team and I look forward to seeing how we respond,” said JCSU women's head coach Vanessa Taylor. “Thus far, we've really been playing as a cohesive unit; LaQwesha Gamble has played well and been essential in scoring and rebounding, Shakeena Cunningham has stepped into the role as a floor general, and our bench has helped us close out some ball games down the stretch.”

Gamble, a transfer junior guard from Winter Haven, FL, leads the team in scoring, rebounds, and assists averaging 13 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. She has scored double figures in every contest this season. Gamble ranks 1st in the CIAA for defensive rebounds (8.0), 7th in total rebounds (10.8), and 18th in scoring (13.0).

Cunningham, a senior guard from Buffalo, NY, has started every game this season for JCSU at point guard. She is 3rd on the team in scoring and 2nd in assists, averaging 7.8 points and 2.4 assists per game. Last year, Cunningham played in 19 games and averaged 4.3 points per game.

Senior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA), junior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC), and junior transfer guard Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN) have all been key contributor for the Lady Golden Bulls. Neely is averaging 7.2 points per game and ranks 2nd in the CIAA in blocks with 2.3 per contest. Jones has started all five games and is second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.2 points. Price has been a bright spot as a reserve, averaging 7.6 points and 24 minutes of action.

JCSU is atop of the CIAA Southern Division as the lone unbeaten team at 5-0. The Lady Golden Bulls have only played non-conference competition this season. Johnson C. Smith is averaging 60.8 points as a team and allowing 55.8 points to their opponents. Belmont is averaging 56.8 points as a team and allowing 70.5 points to their opponents.
