Fayetteville, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball earned a big 84-50 victory over Fayetteville State University in front of a national televised audience Saturday evening inside Capel Arena. JCSU improves to 16-8 overall, 9-7 in the CIAA, and 4-3 in the Western Division. FSU drops to 7-15 overall, and 4-12 in the conference, and 2-5 in the division.
JCSU established an offensive presence early in the contest. A lay-up from senior forward Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, NC) put the Golden Bulls ahead 22-9 with 10:22 on the clock. By halftime, Johnson C. Smith had scored their most points in the first half all season and FSU trailed 48-20.
The Broncos shot 29.6% (8-27) from the floor and 14% from the three point line (2-14). J.C. Smith was on fire shooting 71% (17-24) from the field and 70% (7-10) from beyond the arc. Hollis had a game-high 12 points at the break, followed by senior forwards James Dillard (Apex, NC) and Brian Mobley (Charlotte, NC) with 11 each.
Fayetteville State was more competitive in the second half, but they could not overcome the first half deficit. Johnson C. Smith only outscored FSU 36-30 in the second period. The Golden Bulls won the rebounding battle 41-28.
Dillard finished with a team-high 21 points and five rebounds. Hollis was one rebound shy of a double-double with 20 points and nine boards. Mobley concluded the contest with 17 points, including three three-pointers and six rebounds. Junior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had three triples also for nine points.
Michael Carpenter carried the load for the Broncos with 23 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Johnson C. Smith returns to action on Monday, February 15th against Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Tip-off in this divisional match-up is scheduled for 7:30 pm inside Spaulding Gymnasium.
