Fayetteville, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball fell to Fayetteville State University 51-42 Saturday afternoon inside Felton J. Capel Arena. JCSU moves to 16-9 overall, 9-9 in the CIAA, and 3-5 in the Western Division. FSU earns a season sweep over the Lady Golden Bulls and improves to 15-7, 11-5 in the conference, and 6-1 in the division.
Sophomore forward
April Smith (Auburn, AL) hit a jumper at the top of the key to tie the game for the fifth time (10-10) with 11:17 remaining. On the next possession, sophomore guard Terica Jones (Raleigh, NC) gave JCSU a 12-10 lead with a lay-up off a turnover. The Lady Golden Bulls held a lead for the remainder of the period. At the break, FSU trailed 23-20.
Senior forward
Demetria Bell (Indianapolis, IN) had seven points and six boards for JCSU in the first. Deja Middleton was FSU's leading scorer eight points and four rebounds.
Fayetteville State started the second half with a 6-0 scoring run to take the lead. The Lady Golden Bulls faced a deficit until the end of regulation. With eight minutes remaining, JCSU was a point away from taking control after a score inside from junior guard
Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY). But FSU stretched their advantage and eventually won with consistent free throw shooting in the closing seconds.

Three Lady Broncos scored double figures led by Middleton with 12 points and 10 boards. Danielle Russell produced 11 points and L'Oreal Price had 10.
JCSU will make another attempt to reverse their slump on Monday, February 15th against Shaw University. Tip-off for this divisional contest is scheduled for 5:30 pm in Raleigh, NC.
