Raleigh, NC – The JCSU Golden Bulls basketball team fell to Shaw University 65-60 in CIAA Western Division action Monday evening inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Johnson C. Smith moves to 16-9 overall, 11-7 in the CIAA, and 4-4 in the Western Division; the Bears improve to 13-12 overall, 10-8 in the conference, and 3-5 in the division.
J.C. Smith got off to a quick start with an 8-2 lead after a jumper from senior forward James Dillard (Apex, NC). However, Shaw fought back and put back from Jamaar Hosier tied the game at 13 all. The contest reached its sixth tie at the 4:25 mark, after a free throw from Rodney Callwood. JCSU was outscored 8-3 for the remainder of the half and faced a 37-32 deficit at halftime.
The Golden Bulls beat Shaw 11-4 in points off turnovers in the first half, but the Bears won in second chance points 19-3 and points in the paint 20-12. Junior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had the hot hand with 10 points, followed by Dillard with nine points at the half.
JCSU forced three additional tying points in the game in the second half, including a 52-52 tie with 3:27 remaining. But Callwood was strong down the stretch and Shaw never trailed in the second half. Shaw's bench produced 22 points, compared to just two for J.C. Smith. The Golden Bull starters played an average of 33 minutes tonight.
Four Golden Bulls scored double figures led by senior forward Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, NC) with 17 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Thornhill and Dillard each had 15 points and senior forward Brian Mobley (Charlotte, NC) chipped in with 10 points and three boards.
Rodney Callwood had a game-high 21 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Raheem Smith scored 12 points for the Bears. Shaw dominated the glass with 49 total rebounds compared to 24 for JCSU.
Johnson C. Smith returns to the court for a divisional contest against Chowan University on Thursday, February 18th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
