Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team lost a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the Biddleville Park. WV Tech won game one 10-0 and took game two 7-3. JCSU moves to 1-5 in the overall standings.
The Lady Golden Bulls trailed 5-0 going into the third inning. WV Tech scored five more runs in the third off a two RBI shot to right field and a three RBI homerun. JCSU failed to get a run on the scoreboard and the game was called in the fifth due the eight-run rule.
Danielle Humphries earned the win for the Golden Bears at the mound, only giving up two hits with six strikeouts. Junior pitcher
Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, HI) took the loss with 14 hits off 31 at-bats and four strikeouts.
In game two, JCSU scored in the third inning. Freshman third baseman Alexandria Buckley (Charlotte, NC) singled down the left field line and brought home junior left fielder
Ashley Williams (Temple Hills, MD) from third base.
West Virginia Tech knotted it up at the top of the fourth and scored three runs in the sixth. The Lady Golden Bulls faced a 7-2 deficit going into the bottom of the seventh. Senior catcher
Samantha Smith (Whiteville, NC) smacked a double to right center, scoring Buckley on third. That was the only run and hit for JCSU in the inning.
Lillian McComas got the win for WV Tech with Christa Holley coming in to do some closer work. McComas had six strikeouts off 15 at-bats and Holley had five strikeouts off 12 at-bats, both gave up three hits.
Watanabe pulled double duty and earned her second loss of the day. She faced 31 batters and allowed five hits with four Ks.
Johnson C. Smith will travel to Columbia, SC for their next doubleheader against Benedict College on Tuesday, February 23rd. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
