2008-09 Lady Golden Bulls during the WBCA "Think Pink" campaign
Charlotte, NC – The Lady Golden Bulls basketball team will be suiting up in their pink uniforms on Monday, February 8th when they face Saint Augustine's College in support of the WBCA and their Pink Zone campaign. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association's 2010 "Pink Zone" campaign is aimed at raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
"We always look forward to participating in causes that our close to our hearts,” said JCSU women's basketball head coach
Vanessa Taylor. “This disease has affected our communities, including our close loved ones and it's so important to be a part of the race for a cure. Partnering with the WBCA is just one of the ways we show our support.”
Fans are encouraged to wear pink. The JCSU marketing and promotions team will be issuing Pink Zone t-shirts to those who arrive early for the 5:30 pm contest. Marian Jones and Gloria Lockhart from the JCSU Health Center will be on site with an informational table during the women's game to provide information and helpful tips on breast cancer awareness and prevention.
Ms. Lockhart is a 30-year survivor of breast cancer and has dedicated her life/career to educating the youth on their concerns physically, emotionally, and medically. “I'm delighted to support this cause,” said Lockhart. “It's essential that we teach women of all ages about the importance of self breast exams, general check-ups, and taking care of the whole body, mind, and spirit.”
Over 900 teams across the country are taking part in this year's "Pink Zone" initiative, which officially begins on Feb. 12th.
Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer; and every 13 minutes a woman will die from breast cancer in the United States. This year around 2,030 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer; and of those more than 450 will die.
JCSU is currently 15-6 overall, 8-6 in the CIAA, and 2-2 in the western division. The Lady Golden Bulls are currently ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. Tip-off for Monday's game is slated for 5:30 pm inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
