Petersburg, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's tennis team had a 5-1 outing during the CIAA Roundup held March 19-20th at the Virginia State University tennis courts. JCSU improves to 9-10 overall and 7-2 in the CIAA. The roundup matched western division teams against eastern division teams for the first time this season. 

On Friday, the Golden Bulls faced Elizabeth City State, Virginia Union, and Lincoln (PA). The Lady Vikings were successful in No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles, but lost the match 7-2. JCSU blanked Virginia Union and Lincoln (PA) 9-0 to head into day two 3-0. 

Day two featured matches against St. Paul's, Bowie State, and Virginia State for J.C. Smith. The match versus St. Paul's resulted in a 9-0 victory. Freshman Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) and senior Jae Hargett (Minneapolis, MN) started the match against Bowie State with an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles. 

Kyara Lombre and Cheiyce Fields trumped sophomore Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and Margaret Jones (Newport News, VA) 8-2 at the second doubles position. Junior Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) rebounded with an 8-3 win for a 2-1 JCSU advantage. 

The Lady Bulldogs took No. 1 and No. 3 singles, but lost at the other four positions. JCSU picked up their seventh conference victory with a 6-3 win over Bowie. 

Hargett, Allen, and Breaux won at the No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 singles spot, respectively against Virginia State. VSU won all three doubles competitions and three singles matches for a 6-3 victory. 

Moving forward, Johnson C. Smith will face Livingstone College on Tuesday, March 23rd in Salisbury, NC. Match play is scheduled for 2:00 pm on the campus of Livingstone.
