National STUDENT-Athlete day will be Tuesday, April 6, 2010
CHARLOTTE, NC – Hundreds of schools around the nation will mark Tuesday, April 6, 2010 as National STUDENT-Athlete Day for the 23rd consecutive year, including festivities sponsored by the Johnson C. Smith University. A reception will be held in the View area of the Cafeteria promptly at 5:00 PM honoring approximately 95 JCSU student-athletes.
Johnson C. Smith will be celebrating outstanding achievements made by their student-athletes who have excelled in academics (3.0 GPA or above) from 13 varsity athletic programs, while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities. The invitation-only reception will be followed by a bowling excursion as a social activity for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members.
National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement and who use sport as a vehicle for positive social change. The day, established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports, is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Northeastern University's Sport in Society. National STUDENT-Athlete Day has grown to enormous proportions with 2.6 million student-athletes being honored nationwide since 1997.
Former President Bill Clinton has saluted those involved in National STUDENT-Athlete Day activities. In an open letter acknowledging the day, he wrote, “A healthy balance between sports and academics is essential to ensuring that our students are prepared for the challenges of the future.”
“We are very proud and honored to be in the position to recognize our gifted student-athletes for their strong achievements on and off the field of competition,” stated Director of Athletics,
Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Excellence in academics is an accomplishment that is certainly not overlooked here at Johnson C. Smith, and this is just a small token of our appreciation for their hard work.”
