First conference loss this season

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's tennis team was dealt their first CIAA loss by Shaw University 7-2 Saturday afternoon on the Coleman-Cuthbertson Tennis Courts on the campus of JCSU. The Golden Bulls move to 3-10 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Bears improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA.

The senior duo of Aaron Hutcherson (Cincinnati, OH) and Jason Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) fell 9-7 in number one doubles to Fabio Falcato and Mehdi Ben-Cheikh. Sophomores McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) did not fare much better in No. 2 doubles, losing their match 8-2 against Milos Stankovic and Kalada Kienka. Junior Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) put the first team point up for JCSU with an 8-3 victory over Antoine Jacobs and Martin Faison in number three doubles.

Unfortunately, Shaw was victorious in each singles match with the exception of the number five spot. Jones took out Antoine Jacobs with a deciding 10-5 tiebreaker for the only Golden Bulls' singles win.
Johnson C. Smith University recognized the accomplishments and contributions of tennis coaches Dr. Winston Coleman and James Cuthbertson, Jr. holding a court naming dedication ceremony for both prior to the competition.

Dr. Winston R. Coleman started the University's tennis team in 1931 and coached the Golden Bulls to CIAA Championships in 1934, 1935, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, and 1960.

James Oscar Cuthbertson, Jr. has served as the first and only coach of the JCSU women's tennis program since 1998 and has been coached the men's team since 1995. Cuthbertson has been named CIAA Men's Tennis Coach of the Year four times (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003), led his men's team to six straight CIAA championships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004), and coached the men to 84 straight CIAA conference match wins (1998-2004) and nine consecutive western division championships.

JCSU will return to action on Monday, March 8th against Wittenberg University on the Coleman-Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. First serve is slated for 12 noon.
