JCSU bounces back in the win column for home opener

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team overcame deficits in each set for a 3-0 (25-22, 29-27, 26-24) victory over Morris College on Friday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improved their overall record to 5-9 in the first home match of the season. The Hornets, who compete in the NAIA, drop to 1-4 in the standings.

The Lady Golden Bulls refused to give up a set to Morris in front of a sizable home crowd. JCSU was ahead 21-16, until Morris put together an offensive attack strong enough to tie the score. Head coach Emerald Fulmore took a timeout and J.C. Smith came out refocused to close out the set 25-22.

Johnson C. Smith fell behind in the second and third sets, but rallied back to win in extras 29-27 and 26-24, respectively. Junior outside hitter Tahlia Jolicoeur (Marietta, GA) led the offensive attack with a team-high eight kills with two service aces and a dig. Junior Jennifer Williams (Mitchellville, MD) and freshman Sabrina Johnson (Columbia, SC) both outside hitter and each had seven kills and three digs.

Freshman setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) set her teammates up to the tune of 13 assists with three service aces and digs.

Ebony Murchison and Staci Holmes powered the offense for the Hornets with 15 and 12 kills, respectively.

After a long stint on the road, the Lady Golden Bulls finally get some home cooking. JCSU will face Benedict College on Monday, September 27th inside Brayboy Gymnasium. Match play is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
