JCSU makes it six straight victories

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team continues to make strides after a 69-61 victory against Lincoln University (PA) on Wednesday afternoon inside the Grady Cole Center. JCSU improves to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA, while the Lions fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Golden Bulls held an advantage for the entire game. With a minute remaining before halftime, JCSU went up by 19 (42-23) with a lay-up by freshman forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA). Johnson C. Smith had a 42-26 lead going into the half, shooting 46.4% (13-28) from the floor.

The backcourt did the majority of the scoring in the first half led by sophomore guard and reigning CIAA Player of the Week Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) with 13 points and three assists. Junior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) had 12 points off a perfect shooting performance from the field (4-of-4), the free throw line (2-of-2), and the three point line (2-of-2).

Lincoln came out the second half and outscored JCSU 13-0 in the opening four minutes of the second. Despite pulling within three, the Lions could never move in front. The Golden Bulls still shot 43.5% (10-23) in the second half and won the overall rebounding battle 43-28.

Parks and Otey combined for 46 points and 10 rebounds en route to the victory. Parks had 29 points, four assists, and four rebounds including 11-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe. Otey contributed with 17 points, six boards, and three steals.

Denzel Mooney had 29 points and five rebounds for Lincoln in a losing effort.

“We lost our composure for a while in the second half, but our guards played well tonight especially in the first half,” said head coach and reigning CIAA Coach of the Week #Stephen Joyner, Sr#. “The weather placed some restrictions on our practice schedule, but it's good we managed to get the victory.”

Johnson C. Smith returns to action on Thursday, January 13th against St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA. Tip-off for this conference match-up is scheduled for 7:30 pm inside the Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium. J.C. Smith has faced St. Paul's twice already this season and split wins. In the Fresh Coast Classic held in Milwaukee, WI, JCSU loss to the Tigers 75-69. The Golden Bulls redeemed the loss with an 80-77 win in Brayboy.
