JCSU remains unbeaten in CIAA competitions

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team put another “W” in the win column after a 73-67 victory over Virginia Union University on Monday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU earns their eight consecutive win to improve to 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA; while VUU moves to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) scored a game-high 26 points with five assists as JCSU closed out both halves on top for the victory. The game reached its first tie (19-19) off a floater from freshman forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) with 10:20 on the clock. It remained a seesaw battle, but J.C. Smith went into halftime with a 39-37 lead.

Late into the second half, the game was knotted up for the eighth time (65-65) with 4:12 on the clock. Sophomore center Delonta Boyd (District Heights, MD) was clutch at the free throw line, hitting both to tie and then take a 66-65 lead. The Golden Bulls would not relinquish their advantage from that point. On the next offensive possession, Wilkerson drilled a three pointer just as time on the shot clock was about to expire to put JCSU up by four (69-65).

Justin Ramsey responded on the other end with a lay-up; however that would be the last points scored by VUU in the contest. A put back by Boyd in the closing seconds sealed the deal and Parks made two free throws after a meaningless foul with one tick on the game clock.

Wilkerson surpassed has previous career-high of 12 in the season opener with 14 points, along with four rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had 11 points and six rebounds, followed by Boyd, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

J.C. Smith shot 42.4% from the field (25-59) and 75% from the free throw (15-20).

The Golden Bulls will attempt to keep their hot streak going when they face Bowie State University on Thursday, January 20th. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. Bowie State edged JCSU earlier this season (95-81) during the Fresh Coast Classic in Milwaukee, WI.
