Box Score vs. Bowie State
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team avenged one of their early season losses with an 80-75 win against Bowie State University on Thursday evening inside a chaotic Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the CIAA, while BSU moves to 10-3 overall, 5-1 in the CIAA, and has five-game winning streak snapped.
The Golden Bulls were up 38-37 at halftime after a tightly contested first half. Sophomore guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) had 17 points and five boards at the break. Sophomore center
Delonta Boyd (District Heights, MD) nearly zeroed in on a double-double with nine points and rebounds in the initial period.
This contest reached its sixth tie and 12 lead changes in the second half alone. With a 1:23 left to play, the Bulldogs held a 75-73 advantage, despite an essential three from senior guard
Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA). Thornhill found another way to contribute with a steal and dish to Parks, who nailed a gigantic three with 42 seconds remaining.
The three not only got all the Smithites on their feet in Brayboy, but put J.C. Smith in the lead 76-75. The Bulldogs committed a turnover on their next offensive possession after a steal from senior forward
Earl Jackson (Temple Hills, MD). Jackson was fouled after the steal and converted on both his free throw attempts.
BSU's Eric Vann misfired on a three point attempt and Travis Hyman was rejected by the rim on a put back dunk attempt. Jackson grabbed the rebound for JCSU and dished to Thornhill. Thornhill guaranteed the win with two free throws and only one tick on the clock.
After only shooting 35.4% (28-79) from the field, J.C. Smith forced BSU to commit 14 turnovers and out-rebounded them 55-41.
Parks had a game-high 25 points with six rebounds. Thornhill followed with 17 points, six boards, and three assists. Boyd captured his double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds (11 defensive). Junior guard
James Otey (Roanoke, VA) pitched in with 11 points, five assists, four boards, and three steals.
Travis Hyman led the Bulldogs with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks. Jay Gavin and Byron Westmorland had 16 and 15 points, respectively.
“This team continues to surprise me,” said head coach #Stephen Joyner, Sr#. “We played completely different than when we faced Bowie earlier this year and showed some maturity. Trevin showing a lot of leadership at an early stage, Ronald is proving that winning is his primary focus with his play, Delonta is beginning to settle into his role in the post, and
James Otey looks like he's growing and getting a better understanding of team basketball. Tonight was a good win and I'll take it.”
The Golden Bulls begin divisional competition on Saturday, January 22nd against long standing rival Livingstone College. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside a sure to be capacity-filled Brayboy Gymnasium.
