Tyra Breaux stayed on the attack with a game-high 18 points in the 61-51 victory against Bowie State
Box Score vs. Bowie State
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball earned a 61-51 conference win over Bowie State University on Thursday evening inside an electric Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA, while the Lady Bulldogs move to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
J.C. Smith started off sluggish on offensive until senior guard
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) got hot. After falling behind 6-0, the Lady Golden Bulls eventually tied the game (12-12) with 7:11 remaining in the first half. Bowie State held a 23-22 lead at the half, shooting 40.7% (11-27) from the floor. JCSU shot 34.6% (9-26) from the field, but won the rebounding battle 21-14 in the opening period.
Freshman forward
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) scored in the paint off a layup with 14:43 on the clock to tie the game (28-28). JCSU went cold from there and Bowie State took advantage. The Lady Bulldogs scored 12 unanswered points, including two three-pointers from Brittney Jackson.
Junior guard
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) finally answered back for JCSU with a three to cut into the lead. That three sparked a 17-4 scoring run, which put J.C. Smith ahead with 3:47 left to play. The Bowie State coaching staff drew two technical fouls for disorderly conduct from the officials. Jones hit another clutch shot beyond the arc at the 2:57 mark to give Johnson C. Smith a lead they would not lose.
With time expiring and trailing, Bowie State was forced to foul to conserve time. However, JCSU connected on 9-of-10 free throws with less than a minute to virtually seal the win.
Breaux had a game-high 18 points with eight assists and three steals. Jones contributed with 11 points and four rebounds. Junior guard
Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN) and Davis produced nine and eight points, respectively. Davis filled out her stat line with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Juliette Turner led BSU with 17 points, followed by Chanita Jordan with 11 points and five blocks.
“I was pleased with the production of our bench and our perimeter defense in the second half,” said head coach
Vanessa Taylor. “Tyra (Breaux) really played big for us tonight and got us going early when we needed it. We still have plenty of things to work on, but it's good to win while in the midst of trying to improve.”
Johnson C. Smith moves into divisional play on Saturday, January 22nd against nearby rival Livingstone College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Blue Bears enter this game 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA.
