JCSU MEN’S BASKETBALL SQUANDERS AWAY OPPORTUNITIES IN A 77-73 LOSS TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE

First J.C. Smith loss since December 4th

– The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team were upset by divisional rival Fayetteville State University 77-73 on Saturday evening inside Capel Arena. JCSU has their 10-game winning streak snapped and moves to 12-5 overall, 8-1 in the CIAA, and 1-1 in the Southern Division. The Broncos improve to 9-8 overall, 5-4 in the conference, and 1-1 in the division.

The first half remained close early; there were four ties in opening 10 minutes. An 11-2 FSU scoring run created some distance. JCSU trailed 44-34 heading into halftime with neither team scoring in the final two minutes of the first. The Golden Bulls shot 35% (12-34) from the field, compared to 53% (18-34) shooting from FSU. J.C. Smith forced 18 first half turnovers, but lost the rebounding battle 18-11.

The Broncos led by as much as 17 in the second half. Johnson C. Smith began chipping away at the lead around the final four minutes. JCSU rattled off seven unanswered points and faced a 73-71 deficit with 2:12 remaining after a 15-foot jumper from freshman forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC).

Seth Hawkins penetrated and converted a lay-up for a 75-71 Bronco advantage. Senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) responded on the other end with a jumper for a one possession game (75-73) with 40 seconds left to play. With time expiring, JCSU allowed a critical score by Tim Plummer to seal up the FSU upset in the final ticks.

The Golden Bulls forced Fayetteville State to committed 30 total turnovers and won the second half 39-33. FSU dominated the glass with a 56-26 rebounding disparity.

Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) had a game-high 17 points; first time in eight games Parks had less than 20 or more points. Senior forward Earl Jackson (Temple Hills, MD) produced 13 points and four rebounds. Wilkerson finished with 11 points and four steals. Thornhill and sophomore center Delonta Boyd (District Height, MD) each had nine points.

Five Broncos had double digit point totals led by John Herrington and Tim Plummer with 16 points apiece.

Johnson C. Smith looks to move forward when they face Winston Salem State University on Monday, January 31st. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston Salem, NC. This will be the first clash between these two since February 11, 2006.
