Murfreesboro, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dominated the second half for a 71-55 win against Chowan University on Thursday evening inside the Helms Center. JCSU improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA, while the Hawks fall to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Chowan began with a 6-0 advantage in the opening minute and a half. The Golden Bulls quickly rebounded with inside scoring and free throws. J.C. Smith trailed 16-13 after six minutes of play, when junior guard
James Otey (Roanoke, VA) sparked a 9-0 run. Otey drilled a three pointer to tie the game followed by a lay-up to take the lead. JCSU did not trail again in the half or for the rest of the contest.
Johnson C. Smith led at halftime 31-25, shooting 35.7% from the field (10-28). Sophomore center
Delonta Boyd (District Heights, MD) had a game-high 10 points and five rebounds at the break. Sophomore guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) followed with eight points and two assists.
The Hawks were out-performed in the second half. J.C. Smith led by double digits for the majority of the second period, eventually pushing the lead to 17 with 9:34 on the clock.
The Golden Bulls shot 41.4% from the floor (12-29) in the second and 38.6% for the game (22-57). JCSU won the rebounding battle 48-34. Parks scored 19 second half points for a game-high 27 point performance. Boyd collected a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds (8 defensive).
Travis Williams paced the Hawks with 13 points followed by DeAndre Tyree with 11. Chowan committed 23 personal fouls and sent JCSU to the line for 30 FT attempts. Johnson C. Smith shot 76.7% from the free throw line (23-30), compared to just 50% for Chowan (6-12).
JCSU returns to action for a second consecutive CIAA road contest against Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, January 8th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the RL Vaughn Center in Elizabeth City, NC.
