– The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team earns their second CIAA victory with a 60-52 win against Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening inside the RL Vaughn Center. JCSU improves to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Lady Vikings move to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA.

J.C. Smith scored first and eventually held an 8-2 lead with 13:55 on the clock after a jumper from junior guard Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN). ECSU worked their way back into the game with a 9-2 scoring run. The contest remained close down the stretch, tied up 19-19 with 2:52 left in the half. Johnson C. Smith was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and scored two field goals to close out the period. Elizabeth City State committed three fouls, two turnovers, and only hit two FGs in the same time span.

JCSU had a 30-23 halftime lead, shooting 35.7% from the floor (10-28). Price, senior guard Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY), and junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) all had six points at the break. Tiffany Gadsden led the Lady Vikings with 10 points and six rebounds, shooting 66% from the field (4-6).

The Lady Golden Bulls paced the game in the second half, pushing their lead to double digits three minutes into the period. ECSU made a run and cut the lead down to four (43-39) with 12:47 on the clock. However, JCSU regained control and led by as much as 14 (57-43) after two free throws from Price at the 5:25 mark.

Clock management was handled well by J.C. Smith and they a win a ninth straight victory to start the season. Price finished with a game-high 18 points with six rebounds and two steals as a reserve. Quattlebaum had 11 points and three rebounds, followed by senior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) with 10 points, six boards, and three steals.

JCSU shot 32% (18-56) from the floor, compared to 27% for Elizabeth City State (17-63) and forced 24 turnovers.

Gadsden had a team-high 14 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks for the Lady Vikings.

Johnson C. Smith returns to Charlotte for their next matchup against Lincoln University (PA) on Monday, January 10th. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. inside the Grady Cole Center.
