Brayboy Madness will be in full effect on Sunday, October 16th (3 p.m.) during the annual "Basketball Frenzy"
Charlotte, NC - Johnson C. Smith University will host the annual “Basketball Frenzy” on Sunday, October 16th at 3:00 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The event looks to showcase the 2011-12 editions of the men's and women's basketball teams.
Head Coaches Steve Joyner, Sr. and Vanessa Taylor will welcome and greet those in attendance to observe their squad, respectively. Coaches and players from both teams will be available for autographing posters and pictures with fans.
The International Institution of Sound Marching Band and the Luv-a-Bull cheerleaders will also put on a show. After the lights go down and the teams are introduced, the men's and women's teams will hold Gold/Blue scrimmages (five minutes continuous clock).
Student competitions include a free throw contest, a coed three-point contest, a "Guess How Much is in the Cart contest" supported by Food Lion and recognition of the male and female student with the most school spirit. Giveaways will be conducted throughout the two hour program. Otis Stroud, the voice of Golden Bulls and
Ms. Jessica “The Girl Next Door” from WPEG Power 98 will emcee the event (both JCSU alumni).
The men's team features junior preseason All-American guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC), last season's CIAA Player of the Year. Parks also took home well-deserved preseason All-CIAA honors. Parks scored a conference-high 572 total points last season. He was ranked 1st in the CIAA and 10th in the NCAA DII ranking for scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game. Parks averaged 4.3 assists per game and had three 30+ scoring nights, including a career-high 36 points.
The women's team will be led by a heavy rotation of seniors:
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Park, FL),
Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD),
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC),
Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN),
Phyllis Jenson (Los Angeles, CA), and
April Smith (Auburn, AL). Gamble and Quattlebaum were selected as preseason All-CIAA performers.
Both the men's and women's teams were predicted to finish second in the CIAA Southern Division.
The men's team visits USC-Aikens for a scrimmage game on Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. The Golden Bulls open the season hosting Allen University in the annual JCSU Tip-Off Classic on Friday, November 18th at 8:00 p.m.
The Lady Golden Bulls will tangle with UNC-Wilmington in Wilmington, NC on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. They start the season against Queens University of Charlotte on Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Oven Athletics Complex on the campus of Queens.
