CIAA Tournament opportunity missed

Salisbury, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team got off to an early advantage but ended up losing in four sets (25-21, 25-27, 18-25, and 15-25) to Livingstone College on Monday evening (Oct. 24) in a CIAA divisional contest inside Trent Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 4-24 overall, 2-13 in the CIAA, and 0-9 in the Southern Division.

The loss eliminates Johnson C. Smith for contention in the 2011 CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament (Nov. 4-6, 2011); despite having two divisional matches remaining. Eight teams from the conference – the top four in both the Northern and Southern Division – advance to the championship tourney.

Senior hitter Jennifer Williams (Mitchellville, MD) led the way with seven kills and 14 digs for the Lady Golden Bulls. JCSU played their best in the first set, leading most of the way en route to a 25-21 victory. The second set was forced into extra points, but the Lady Blue Bears prevailed 27-25.

Freshman hitter Amber Alexander (Miami, FL) racked up a match-high 27 digs. Sophomore setter Kayla Bazemore dished out five assists along with nine digs. Senior libero captain Sharelle Hartley (Durham, NC) contributed with 18 digs and four assists.

JCSU will continue to play on the road for their next contest against Winston-Salem State University. Match play is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the Gaines Center.
