Golden Bulls winless in the Southern Division

Winston-Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team fell in three sets (22-25, 25-18, 25-17) to Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday evening inside the C.E. Gaines Center. JCSU moves to 4-25 overall and 2-13 in the CIAA; the Lady Rams improve to 15-9 overall and 12-3 in the conference.

The Golden Bull women went toe-to-toe with Winston-Salem State in the first set. Senior Jennifer Williams (Mitchellville, MD) forced an attack error to draw within one (14-13). WSSU got on a roll recording five straight points for a sizable lead (19-13). Williams and sophomore hitter Elana Foster (Seattle, WA) earned kills towards the end of set off assists from sophomore setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC).

Bazemore tallied 18 assists, three digs, and a block assists throughout the match. Williams ended with a team-high eight kills along with three block assists and a service ace. On the defensive end, sophomore Teyonna Gore (Durham, NC) had eight digs followed sophomore hitter Amber Alexander (Miami, FL) with six digs.

Winston-Salem State maintained a pattern of jumping out to a five plus point lead and fighting off JCSU spurts.

Johnson C. Smith had 25 total kills as a team against WSSU. The team is averaging 6.3 kills per set (18 kills per match) this season.

The Golden Bulls have one match remaining in the 2011 season against Fayetteville State University. JCSU will travel to Capel Arena on Friday, October 28th to face the Lady Broncos. Match play is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
