JCSU tops Shaw in football for the first time since 1978

Box Score vs. Shaw

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football interrupted the Bears' homecoming celebration with a 36-27 victory over Shaw University on Saturday afternoon inside Durham County Stadium. JCSU improves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA; while Shaw drops to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Before the football program was reinstated at Shaw in 2003, these two teams last played in 1978. Johnson C. Smith won the contest 29-20; their last victory against the Bears. Since returning, the Bears have dominated the series (4-0) under head coach Darrell Asberry. Coach Asberry and the Bears, winners of the three of the last four CIAA title, ran into a different Golden Bulls squad this Saturday.

J.C. Smith scored first and never trailed throughout the game. Freshman quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) capped a 14-play, 80 yard drive with a touchdown toss to sophomore receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte, NC). Once inside the red, Capers made a fingertip catch six yards out in the back of the end zone.

Shaw eventually got on the scoreboard at the 14:22 mark of the second quarter. Lyncon Shepherd hit a 32 yard field goal to bring the Bears within four (JCSU 7-3). The Golden Bulls responded on the next drive with a field goal of their own. Senior place kicker Julius Wright (Fort Worth, TX) was successful from 21 yards to stretch the lead to seven (10-3).

After holding Shaw to another field goal (10-6), JCSU made a strong power play before the close of the half. Wallace drove the Golden Bulls 70 yards in nine plays for another touchdown. This time, Wallace connected with junior running back Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) on a 10 yard wheel route for the score. J.C. Smith went into the locker room at the half with a 16-6 advantage (extra point attempt missed).

Johnson C. Smith appeared to have the Bears off balance for the majority of the contest. Anderson took advantage of huge gaps on draw plays in a four receiver spread offensive set. Anderson racked up 119 yards off 16 carries and one touchdown rushing. He also caught three passes, including the 10 yard TD before the end of the first half.

The Golden Bulls looked like they would run away with the game after a third touchdown in the third quarter. Anderson sprung free on the left side to make the score 22-6 with 10:21 on the clock. The Johnson C. Smith defense made the Bears' quarterback uncomfortable most of the afternoon. JCSU produced six sacks, four pass deflections, and an interception returned 34 yards by senior defensive back Lamarr Person (Atlanta, GA).

Shaw snitched to freshman Homer Causey at quarterback in the second half. Casey scored the Bears first TD from the one yard line. Freshman receiver William Trimble (Fayetteville, GA) had a punt return go through his hands for a fumble deep in JCSU territory. The Bears recovered the ball and scored, but trailed 22-13.

Wallace threw a 20 yard touchdown reception to junior receiver Matthew Jeffries (Gainesville, GA) for a 29-13 advantage. After the score, J.C. Smith led 29-13 with 13:44 remaining in the game. However, Causey led Shaw on back-to-back touchdown drives to draw within two (29-27).

The Golden Bulls virtually closed out the contest after a two yard touchdown QB sneak by Wallace. That touchdown sealed the victory (36-27) and snapped the losing streak to the Garnet and White.

“I'm not much for being too rah-rah over historical records and numbers, but I understand this is a significant win for us,” said head coach Steven Aycock. “We put aside what has happened in the past; all the guys in our locker room have made a commitment. It's all about being good to the game; if you're good to the game, the game will be good to you.”

Johnson C. Smith totaled 367 yards on offense (179 passing, 188 rushing) and on defense held the Bears to 257 yards. Wallace finished with 179 yards off 20-of-31 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 48 yards and a TD.

CIAA sack leader Derrick “Deuce” Johnson (Charlotte, NC) collected six tackles including two sacks for a loss for 29 yards. Johnson now has a season-high eight sacks on the year. Senior linebacker Quinton Toomer (Atlanta, GA) had two sacks in his seven-tackle total (six solo) on the afternoon.

Senior defensive tackle Rashad Dukes (Charlotte, NC) collided with the quarterback for a solo sack and a half with
sophomore safety Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL).  Dukes and Franklin both had five tackles.

The Golden Bulls will now prepare for their homecoming showdown against Virginia Union University. The 2011 JCSU Homecoming is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th inside the Irwin Belk Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
