Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team topped North Greenville University 65-44 on Tuesday evening inside the newly renovated Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 2-0 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 1-1 in the standings.
The Golden Bulls gained their first lead at the 12:30 mark of the first half. Senior guard
Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) connected on a jumper from the wing for a 10-8 JCSU lead. Unable to regain the lead, North Greenville trailed for the remainder of the contest. Johnson C. Smith led 35-18 at halftime.
JCSU expanded their lead to as much as 22 in the second half and held a double digit advantage throughout. Three Golden Bulls scored double figures in the contest.
Price had a team-high 16 points with six rebounds and four steals. Senior guard
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) dropped in 13 points and four steals. Sophomore center
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) produced 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Senior guard
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) nearly closed in on her second double-double with 12 rebounds and seven points.
Johnson C. Smith shot 35% from the floor (26-74) and 54.5% from the free throw line (12-22). North Greenville made 26.7% from the field (16-60) and 52.6% from the charity stripe (10-19). The rebounding battle favored the Golden Bulls 57-46 with 15 second chance points.
Krisceda Cotton paced the Crusaders with 17 points and eight rebounds. In addition to low shooting percentages, North Greenville committed 22 turnovers.
JCSU women's basketball returns to action on Friday, November 18th against Pfeiffer University during the 2011 Queen City Classic hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The earlier contests of the classic will feature Tuskegee versus Livingstone at 12 noon and Winston-Salem State versus Wingate at 2:00 p.m.
