Five score double figures for JCSU

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team cruised to a 93-67 win against Allen University on Friday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU opens the season with a victory in the JCSU Tip-off Classic, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-4 in the standings.

When teams play together, out-rebound their opponent by 22, and shoot 50% from the field, big victories are usually the result. JCSU did all three, hence the successful outcome versus Allen. Johnson C. Smith had five finished with double digit point totals led by reigning CIAA Player of the Year, junior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC). Parks produced a team-high 17 points with seven assists and six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) and junior guard Phillip Wood (Suitland, MD) contributed to the scoring effort with 13 points apiece. Wilkerson also tallied eight rebounds and three blocks. Wood fell three rebounds shy of closing in on his own double-double with seven boards and two steals.

Allen lost the rebounding battle 55-33 and shot just 34.8% from the field (23-66). Richard Johnson had 19 points and four steals for the Yellow Jackets; he connected on 5-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc.

Sophomore forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) had an effective 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. Junior center Delonta Boyd (District Heights, MD) pitched in a sneaky double-double of 12 rebounds and 10 points. Junior forward Calvin Smith (Auburn, AL) had a notable nine point, seven rebound performance.

The Golden Bulls bullied Allen by outscoring them 58-24 inside the paint. JCSU led by as much as 37 half way through the second half and led by 19 at halftime (93-67).

Johnson C. Smith has another opportunity to catch lightning in a bottle on Saturday, November 19th. JCSU will face Wingate University on day two of the Claude Saunders/Wendy's JCSU Tip-off Classic at 8:00 p.m. inside Brayboy. Allen opens the second day of the classic taking on Virginia Union University at 4:00 p.m.
