Box Score vs. NC A&T

Greensboro, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team lost 71-61 to North Carolina A&T State University on Monday evening inside the Corbett Sports Center. JCSU moves to 6-3 overall, while the Lady Aggies improve to 6-2 in the standings.

The first half was tightly contested by both teams with a slight advantage to JCSU. Senior guards Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) and Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) were hot from the floor early. Each scored 11 points and combined for 5-of-8 shooting from the three-point line.

Jaylan Bodiford eventually tied the game at 32 for the Lady Aggies with a free throw at the 1:31 mark. Sophomore center Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) capped the half with a turnaround hook in the post. Davis connected on one free throw attempt prior to the field goal for a 35-32 JCSU lead at the break.

The Golden Bulls shot 50% (5-10) from three and 75% (6-8) from the charity stripe. NC A&T struggled by comparison, shooting 17% (1-6) from beyond the arc and 37.5% (3-8) from the FT line. JCSU out-rebounded the Lady Aggies 28-23 in the first half.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, the Golden Bulls were ahead by five. Sophomore forward LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) delivered on five consecutive points for a 47-42 JCSU lead.

NC A&T reversed the tides with a 10-2 scoring run following the baskets from Wilkerson. Price fed Quattlebaum off a steal for a fast break JCSU lay-up. The Golden Bulls trailed 58-57 with 7:20 remaining in the contest.

An 11-2 Aggies scoring spurt over the next four minutes placed JCSU in a 69-59 hole. Davis scored in the paint to record the last Golden Bulls' points with 2:08 on the clock. Too many second half scoring droughts resulted in the JCSU loss.

In the second frame, Johnson C. Smith shot 31.4% (11-35) from the field including 0-of-7 from the three point line. NC A&T improved their shooting percentage from 36% in the first half to 56% (19-34) in the second.

Quattlebaum concluded the game with a team-high 17 points. Davis and Price each produced 15 points. Davis earned a double-double with 10 rebounds. Surprisingly, senior guard LaQwesha Gamble had eight boards and season-low one point. Gamble shot 0-of-9 from the floor in 30 minutes of action.

Four players had double digit point totals for the Lady Aggies. JaQuayla Berry led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nikia Gorham provided support with 15 points and nine boards. NC A&T won the scoring battle in the paint 58-26.

JCSU has one last match-up before 2011 comes to a close. The Golden Bulls return home to face No. 19 Tusculum College on Friday, December 16th. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
