Golden Bulls split season series with the Royals

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team dropped non-conference game 62-57 to nearby Queens University of Charlotte inside Brayboy Gymnasium on Monday evening. JCSU moves to 6-2 overall, while the Lady Royals improve to 2-6 in the standings. The Golden Bulls opened the season with a 72-63 victory at Queens, but tonight's loss even the series.

Johnson C. Smith maintained control in the first half once gaining the lead. Senior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) scored back to back fast break layups to take a 6-5 advantage five minutes into the game.

JCSU held the lead for the remainder of the half; growing it out to 12 with a 1:17 before the break. Queens trailed 34-27 at halftime. Senior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) produced nine points, five rebounds, and two blocks in the opening. Quattlebaum and senior guard Shavonda Price (Fort Wayne, IN) each scored eight to account for the halftime lead.

The Golden Bulls poor shooting caught up with them in the second half. For the game, JCSU shot a season low 27.5% (22-80) from the floor. Queens went on a 12-5 scoring run seven minutes into the second. The run tied the game 39-39. On five more occasions, the score in the contest remained knotted up.

After a jumper from Gamble with 6:23 on the clock, the Golden Bulls went cold. The Royals produced seven unanswered points (five from the free throw line) over a four minute stretch. JCSU made just two field goals in the final 1:28 to play. Queens iced the game with 6-of-6 shooting from the foul line in the same time frame.

JCSU outscored Queens 34-20 in the paint and 22-8 off second chance opportunities. The Royals lost the rebounding battle 63-37, but shot 41% (11-27) from the field in the second half.

Gamble recorded her fifth double-double with 15 points and 15 boards. Price had 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) chimed in with 10 points, five boards, and two steals. Sophomore center Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds in 17 minutes of play.

Shanel Sweet led the Royals scoring a game-high 23 points, including 9-of-10 shooting from the FT line.

The Golden Bulls will have a week gap before facing North Carolina A&T State University on Monday, November 12th. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Aggies campus in Greensboro, NC.
