First JCSU loss to Shaw in Brayboy since the 2000-01 season

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team allowed Shaw University to pull off a season sweep after a 76-70 loss on Monday evening inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls slip to 13-9 overall, 9-5 in the CIAA, and 2-5 in the Southern Division; while the Bears improve to 16-7 overall, 9-5 conference, and 4-2 in the division.

After six lead changes and four ties in the first half, JCSU held a 33-29 lead at halftime. J.C. Smith shot 43.8% (14-32) from the floor and 57% (4-7) at the three point line. Senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had 11 points off 4-of-5 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three.

In the second half, Johnson C. Smith appeared to be on their way to victory. Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) came down court and hit a three at the 8:28 mark to give the Golden Bulls their largest lead of the game (61-51).

From that point, the Bears rallied and scored 13 unanswered points over a five minute stretch. The contest seemed to be rolling in Shaw's direction after going up 71-65 off a big dunk from Greg Thomas with 1:37 remaining. JCSU never managed to overcome the deficit and dropped their fifth out of the last six games.

Thornhill came off the bench and scored a game-high 23 points (7-of-10 from the 3-pt line) with five assists. Parks dished out eight assists with 16 points and sophomore center Delonta Boyd (District Heights, MD) had a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.

Tony Smith and Devon McLendon scored 22 and 20 points, respectively. The Bears out-rebounded JCSU 43-32 and outscored them 36-18 in the paint.

JCSU returns to the court for another divisional contest against Winston Salem State University on Saturday, February 19th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. Johnson C. Smith Athletics will honor the 2001 CIAA Tournament Men's Basketball Championship team as they celebrate the 10th Anniversary of winning the first conference title in school history.
