GOLDEN BULLS MEN’S & WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS 9-0 AGAINST WINGATE

Wingate, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's and women's tennis teams both dropped matches 9-0 against the Bulldogs of Wingate University in NCAA Division II tennis action Thursday afternoon on the tennis courts at Wingate. The JCSU men move to 1-9 overall, while the women move to 1-7 on the season. The Wingate men improve to 2-2 overall, while the women move to 4-1 on the year.

The JCSU women won two games, but lost all three matches in doubles action. The freshman duo of Felicia Akande (Winston-Salem, NC) and Keina Love (Wilson, NC) were notched 8-1 by Kara Stasikelis and Kelli Ferguson in number one doubles. Junior Rolanda Sue (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore Margaret Jones (Newport News, VA) came up short 8-1 to Samantha Alschlager and Ali Evers in number two doubles. Morgan Winston and Olivia Poole blanked junior Camille Allen (Teaneck, NJ) and sophomore Samantha Barnes (Hampton, VA) 8-0 in number three doubles.

Love, Allen, and Jones suffered losses in number one, four and six singles, respectively, without grasping a match point (6-0, 6-0). Akande lost in number two singles (6-1, 6-0); while Rue faced defeat by the same score in number three singles. Barnes had the most competitive match against Helen Goreski in a 6-1, 6-1 loss in number five singles action.

The men dropped all three doubles matches with one match point in number two action. Andrew Owen and Flavio Rathsam beat out the junior duo of Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) and McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) for an 8-0 win in number one singles. Senior Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) and junior Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) were unsuccessful against Fernando Montemurro and Ryan Forbes also losing 8-0 in number three doubles, while senior Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Dion Chever (Newport News, VA) fell 8-1 in number two doubles.

The Golden Bulls were swept in singles action, in all six flights.

The women's team returns to action on Saturday, February 19th when they host Clark Atlanta University at 1:00 p.m. The men's next match is scheduled for Saturday, March 5th in a home match against the University of Charleston at 1:00 p.m. Both contests will be played at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
