Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team ignited Brayboy Gymnasium with a 60-53 victory over Winston Salem State University on Saturday evening at home. JCSU improves to 21-2 overall, 13-2 in the CIAA, and 7-1 in the Southern; while the Lady Rams fall to 15-9 overall, 10-5 conference, and 5-3 in the division.
Aside from a quick 5-0 start by WSSU, this game was locked up tight throughout. There were 11 lead changes and nine times when the game was tied. At the half, Winston Salem held a slim 26-24 lead after two free throws from Taneisha White. JCSU shot 28% (9-32) from the floor and 43% (3-7) from the free throw line in the opening. The Lady Rams had better shooting percentage: 40% (10-25) from the field and 75% (3-4) from the FT line, despite only a two-point advantage.
Junior guard
Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) had a team-high seven points at the break, followed by six rebounds and four steals from freshman forward
Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany). Jasmine Newkirk carried the Lady Rams with 10 points and two assists.
The game took a final turn in the direction of JCSU at the 2:29 mark. Jones was fouled by Newkirk and sent to the line to shoot two. She tied the game with the first made FT and gained a 51-50 lead with the second. Along with those two FTs, J.C. Smith outscored WSSU 8-0 in the closing two minutes. The Lady Golden Bulls held a 57-50 advantage with 33 second left to play.
Courtney Medley connected on a three pointer for the final Lady Rams' basket and JCSU sealed the contest with 3-of-4 shooting from the free throw line in closing 18 seconds.

Courtney Medley had a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for WSSU. Newkirk concluded the contest with 12 points. JCSU outscored Winston Salem 12-3 in second chance opportunities, 27-4 in points off the bench, and 36-27 in the second half.
Johnson C. Smith returns to action for their final home contest of the season against St. Augustine's College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Brayboy Gymnasium. The women's program will bid farewell to center
